Civil Mediation

Saving individuals time, money and stress

Civil mediation helps individuals resolve disputes without the need for court proceedings. It's an effective way to address conflicts that might otherwise damage relationships, drain finances, and consume months or years of your time.

Common Examples of Civil Disputes

  • Probate, wills, and inheritance disputes: Disagreements over estates, trust administration, or family inheritance.

  • Property and boundary disputes: Conflicts over boundaries, access rights, maintenance responsibilities, or property damage.

  • Landlord and tenant disagreements: Disputes over deposits, repairs, rent, or lease terms.

  • Neighbour disputes: Issues ranging from noise and parking to trees, fences, and shared facilities.

  • Consumer and small claims: Disputes over faulty goods, poor service, or unpaid bills

These disputes can be emotionally draining and financially costly. What starts as a small disagreement can quickly escalate, damaging relationships and creating stress that affects your daily life.

How Civil Mediation Works

Mediation provides a private, efficient alternative to court. In a typical civil mediation:

  1. Initial contact: We discuss your situation and whether mediation is appropriate.

  2. Preparation: I gather basic information and speak with all parties to explain the process.

  3. Mediation session: We meet (in person or online) to explore the issues, discuss options, and work towards agreement.

  4. Agreement: If successful, we document the agreed terms, which can be made legally binding if needed.

The process is flexible - some disputes resolve in a single session, while more complex matters may require additional meetings.

Why Civil Mediation Works

Drawing on my experience of unravelling complex situations and managing difficult conversations, I help the parties get clarity on the key issues, understand each other's perspectives, and work together to reach practical agreements that work for everyone.

Mediation isn't about avoiding difficult conversations - it's about having them in a structured, safe environment where progress is possible. I create that space and guide the process so you can focus on finding solutions.

When to Consider Civil Mediation

  • Before legal action: Mediation can resolve disputes before they reach court, saving time and money.

  • During legal action: If progress is slow or things have stalled, mediation can offer a constructive and cost-effective solution.

  • When relationships matter: If you need to maintain a relationship with the other party - family, neighbours, business contacts - mediation preserves those connections.

  • For complex or emotional disputes: Mediation provides space to address underlying concerns that courts can't always handle.
